You pay by the hour for the running software, billed per instance. The single price factor is the AWS EC2 instance type you choose to run the Wireguard VPN server. Options span several families: burstable t2 and t3/t3a types for lighter workloads, and general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5ad, m5n, and m5dn types for steadier demand. Within each family, sizes scale from nano and micro up through metal, so hourly cost rises with vCPU, memory, and networking capacity. You run only the size you need and stop when you're done.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for this Wireguard VPN server?
One unit is one running EC2 instance of the size you pick, billed per hour. The instance runs the Wireguard VPN server software on Ubuntu 22.04. You are charged for each hour the instance runs, regardless of how many VPN users you create on it.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped?
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. A stopped instance stops the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS storage fees may still apply while the instance is stopped. To end all software charges, stop the instance when you no longer need the VPN.
Does adding more VPN users increase my hourly cost?
No. Hourly cost is tied only to the instance type you run, not the number of VPN users. You create users with the addvpnuser command on the server. Choose a size with enough vCPU, memory, and network capacity to support your expected user load.

Headscale is the open-source, self-hosted implementation of the Tailscale control plane - run a private WireGuard-based mesh VPN without sending coordination metadata or auth flows through Tailscale's hosted infrastructure. Unlike bare Headscale AMIs that ship without a default user, no pre-auth key, and the gRPC/metrics interfaces exposed, this Lynxroute build is ready out of the box: noise key per instance, default user and reusable pre-auth key created at first boot, gRPC and Prometheus metrics bound to loopback, and a CIS Level 1 hardened Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base.

NetBird is an open-source overlay network that connects your machines into a private WireGuard mesh. Peers build encrypted point-to-point tunnels wherever the network allows and fall back to a relay when it does not, so laptops, servers, containers and cloud VMs reach each other by a stable private address regardless of NAT or firewalls, with access governed centrally by groups and policies. This Lynxroute build runs the complete control plane on one instance - management, signal, relay, STUN and an embedded identity provider - so there is no external identity provider to register, no SaaS account, and no separate coturn container to operate. The administrator credential is generated at first boot, the dashboard and API sit behind an nginx TLS perimeter, and the certificate is issued for the instance address so peers can validate it immediately. On CIS Level 1 hardened Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.
