"Real-time Ubuntu Pro is an Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish server AMI that enables the real-time kernel option on boot, running with the 5.15-rt patch set implemented.
By integrating the upstream PREEMPT_RT patches, real-time Ubuntu reduces kernel latencies as required by the most demanding workloads and is more preemptive than mainline Linux. Real-time Ubuntu helps ensure time-predictable task execution by minimizing non-preemptible critical sections in kernel code. Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for each running instance, with no upfront commitment. Pricing maps to specific AWS Graviton (ARM64) instance types across the C6g, C7g, C6gn, C7gn, C6gd, M6g, M6gd, R6g, and R6gd families. Each family targets a workload profile: compute, network-heavy compute, memory, or local storage. Within each family, cost scales with instance size, from medium up through metal, because charges track the instance's vCPU count. Larger sizes carry more vCPUs and cost more per hour. You select the instance type that fits your workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Charges track the instance's vCPU count and meter by the second. Instances with more vCPUs cost more per hour. This applies across all the Graviton families listed. You pay only while an instance runs.
You get security patches for Ubuntu infrastructure and hundreds of open source applications. It includes FIPS 140-3 and Common Criteria EAL2 certified components, optional CIS and DISA STIG hardening, and Kernel Livepatch, which applies kernel security patches without a reboot. Maintenance runs until 2032 for this release.
The software fee meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue Ubuntu Pro charges. Stopped instances may still incur separate AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are billed by AWS, not by the software licence.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest it is suggested to manually configure your Security Group/Firewall settings. The 1-Click Security Group opens only port 22 so that you can access your instance via ssh using login 'ubuntu'. If you chose the 1-Click Security Group, you may change it later to enable applications using the AWS Console or API.
