The AMI helps reduce manual hardening effort and configuration drift across AWS accounts and environments. Infrastructure teams can deploy the same reviewed baseline behind their own network controls, identity model, deployment pipeline, observability stack, backup policy, and workload configuration.

This image is built for x86-64 EC2 instances and supports x86-64 EC2 instance families and x86-64-native application stacks.
Deploy and Operate with Confidence
The image is ready for use when launched. Citadel recommends AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) for administrative access whenever possible so SSH does not need to be exposed to the public Internet.
If SSH is required, use the rocky account, your selected EC2 key pair, and tightly scoped network access.

This AMI is designed to support Citadel Hardened Baseline infrastructure objectives, but launching a hardened image does not by itself make an application, AWS account, regulated environment, or organization secure or compliant with any external framework.
Customers remain responsible for the security and compliance of their complete environment, including application security, IAM, network segmentation, encryption, key and secret management, logging, monitoring, vulnerability management, backups, incident response, operational procedures, and compliance validation.

You pay by the hour for this hardened Rocky Linux 8 image, billed for each hour an instance runs. The many dimensions map to specific AWS EC2 instance types, so your rate follows the instance you choose. Options span both x86_64 and ARM64 (Graviton) families, plus sizes from small (like t3.small) to large bare-metal and high-memory machines (like u-24tb1.112xlarge). There are no tiers or commitments; pricing scales with the size and class of the instance you run. Separate AWS infrastructure charges apply on top of the software fee.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for billing purposes?
One unit is one running EC2 instance for one hour. You pick an instance type, and that type's hourly software rate applies while it runs. Each active instance meters separately. If you run several instances, each one accrues its own hourly software charge on the same invoice.
Am I charged the software fee when an instance is stopped or paused?
The software fee meters running hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS charges, such as storage for attached volumes, may still apply while the instance is stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Does choosing x86_64 or ARM64 (Graviton) change how I am billed?
Billing stays hourly per running instance for both. Your rate follows the specific instance type you launch, so an ARM64 (Graviton) type and an x86_64 type each carry their own hourly rate. Confirm architecture availability and the exact rate on the listing before launch.

Using Hardened Rocky Linux 8
Connect to Your Instance
We recommend using AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) whenever possible. It provides a secure way to access your instance without exposing SSH to the public Internet.
If SSH is enabled, limit port 22 in your security group to your trusted IP address whenever possible. For production environments, we recommend deploying the instance inside a private VPC and using SSM or another controlled access method.
Use the documentation to review the image's security baseline, applied controls, validation results, and any documented exceptions.
