You run this software-based router on your own AWS EC2 instances, and the software itself carries no charge under this free listing. Pricing is organized by EC2 instance type, so your cost depends on which instance you select. Options split into two families: t3 and t3a general-purpose instances, and c5 and c5a compute-optimized instances. Within each family, sizes range from small through 9xlarge. You pick one instance based on your needed compute and network capacity. Larger instance sizes provide more processing power. All options deliver the same router software; the choice sets your compute footprint.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hourly rate reflects the AWS EC2 instance you run the router software on. The software itself carries no charge. Your bill meters the running instance-hours for the instance type you pick. Fully stopped instances stop the compute charge, though AWS storage fees may still apply separately.
The t3 and t3a families are general-purpose instances. The c5 and c5a families are compute-optimized for heavier processing. Both run the same router software. Pick a compute-optimized instance for higher VPN channel counts or larger site networks; pick general-purpose for lighter workloads.
VPN channel capacity depends on the total performance of the host system, so a larger instance can support more channels. The router supports up to 3,000 VPN channels and WLAN-controller functions for up to 1,500 access points, subject to host capacity. The instance choice sets your compute footprint.
