You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you choose to run this Metabase AMI. Pricing scales with the compute size you pick, not with users or features. The options span several instance families — burstable t2 and t3/t3a types, general-purpose m4, m5, m5a, m6a, m6i, m7a, and m7i types, compute-optimized c5, c5a, and c6a types, and memory-optimized r5, r5a, r6a, and r6i types. Within each family, larger sizes (medium, large, xlarge) cost more per hour. The software rate is the same; your total depends on the instance and hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
You pay for one running EC2 instance preloaded with Metabase. The instance type you pick sets its vCPU and memory. For example, t3, t3a, and t2 types are burstable, m-family types are general-purpose, c-family types favor compute, and r-family types offer more memory. The developer guide recommends t3.medium for typical setups.
The software rate meters running time only. When you stop the instance from the EC2 console, hourly software charges stop accruing. You can restart it later. Underlying AWS resources like storage and any S3 backup bucket may still incur separate AWS fees while the instance is stopped.
There is no upgrade path within a single instance. To change size, you launch the AMI again on a new instance type through CloudFormation and migrate your data. The guide advises backing up server data before removing the old stack. Billing then follows the new instance type's hourly rate.

Metabase Deployment on EC2 with S3 Backup and IAM Integration
This deployment launches Metabase on an Amazon EC2 instance within a secure VPC, providing a reliable business intelligence and analytics environment. The solution includes IAM roles for secure integration with Amazon S3 for automated PostgreSQL backups and Route 53 for domain configuration. The AMI is preinstalled and configured, allowing users to start creating dashboards, querying data, and generating reports immediately after launch. Users can access the platform via public IP or configure a custom domain with SSL for secure access. Security groups control access over HTTP, HTTPS, and SSH ports. This architecture is designed for scalable analytics, secure data access, and full control over BI infrastructure on AWS.

AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). Click the "Continue to Subscribe" button. After subscribing, you will need to accept the terms and conditions. Click on "Accept Terms" to proceed. Please wait for a few minutes while the processing takes place. Once it's completed, click on "Continue to Configuration".
IAM Role is set up and configured with the necessary permissions to assume the role for the Metabase service. The IAM Policy is created and responsible for access Route53 and create Letsencrypt SSL certificates and backing up data to the S3 bucket. Access the application via a browser at http://<your domain name> or http://<Public IPv4 address>.
Product will try to create SSL certificate when its deploying, if domain hosted on route53. If the automatic SSL creation unsuccesful then you have to point domain name into server ip, ssh into server and run sudo /root/certificate_generate_standalone.sh. Admin email using for SSL generation.
