You pay based on the volume of network traffic processed, measured in gigabytes (GB). Billing is usage-based, so your cost scales with how much traffic the managed rules inspect. The four dimensions differ only by AWS Region: us-east-1, us-east-2, us-west-1, and us-west-2. You are charged per GB in whichever Region your traffic is processed. There are no tiers or fixed commitments—each Region is billed independently by actual usage. If you run in more than one Region, you pay the applicable per-GB rate in each.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What counts as one gigabyte of traffic processed for billing?
One unit equals one gigabyte of network traffic that the managed rules inspect through AWS Network Firewall. The meter counts actual traffic volume passing through the firewall in a given Region. You are billed on measured throughput, not on the number of rules or threats blocked.
Does my cost change automatically as traffic volume rises or falls?
Yes. Billing is usage-based, so charges accrue per gigabyte processed. When traffic increases, your cost rises proportionally. When traffic drops, you pay less. No manual upgrade or tier change is needed, and there are no fixed commitments that apply regardless of usage.
If I run in multiple Regions, how do the four dimensions combine on my bill?
Each Region meters independently. Traffic processed in us-east-1, us-east-2, us-west-1, and us-west-2 is billed separately at that Region's per-gigabyte rate. The charges add together on one invoice. Your total depends on how much traffic each Region processes, not on any single combined figure.
