The AMI helps reduce manual hardening effort and configuration drift across AWS accounts and environments. Deploy and Operate with Confidence
The image is ready for use when launched. Citadel recommends AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) for administrative access whenever possible so SSH does not need to be exposed to the public Internet.
If SSH is required, use the rocky account, your selected EC2 key pair, and tightly scoped network access.

This AMI is designed to support PCI DSS infrastructure objectives, but launching a hardened image does not by itself make an application, AWS account, cardholder data environment, or organization PCI DSS compliant.

You pay by the hour for each running instance, with no upfront commitment. Pricing scales with the ARM64 (Graviton) EC2 instance type you launch. The many dimensions map to AWS instance families and sizes, such as general-purpose (m-series), compute-optimized (c-series), memory-optimized (r- and x-series), and storage- or network-focused options. Larger sizes carry more virtual CPUs, memory, and storage, so their hourly rate rises accordingly. You select the instance that fits your workload, and the software fee is billed alongside AWS infrastructure charges for the hours you run.

What do I get for the hourly software fee on each ARM64 instance?
You get a hardened Rocky Linux 9 baseline configured for PCI DSS, patched monthly, with a per-image evidence pack as published on the listing. The fee covers the operating-system layer and US-based support. Your application, cloud configuration, and assessor validation stay outside this scope.
Am I charged the software fee when an instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running instance-hours. A fully stopped instance accrues no software charges. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs. Underlying AWS storage or other infrastructure charges may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are separate from the software fee.
How do the software fee and AWS infrastructure charges combine on my bill?
The two charges bill independently for the same running hours and appear on your AWS invoice together. The instance type you launch drives both figures: larger sizes carry more vCPUs, memory, and storage, so both the software fee and the AWS infrastructure charge rise accordingly.

Using PCI Compliant / Hardened Rocky Linux 9 (ARM)
Connect to Your Instance
We recommend using AWS Systems Manager Session Manager (SSM) whenever possible. It provides a secure way to access your instance without exposing SSH to the public Internet.
If SSH is enabled, limit port 22 in your security group to your trusted IP address whenever possible. For production environments, we recommend deploying the instance inside a private VPC and using SSM or another controlled access method.
Use the documentation to review the image's security baseline, applied controls, validation results, and any documented exceptions.
