    Overview

    Open image

This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for cloudimg support services.

Self-Hosted Project Management, Ready in Minutes

OpenProject is a powerful open source platform for classic, agile, and hybrid project management and team collaboration. This image from cloudimg delivers OpenProject fully installed and configured as a production appliance on AWS - so your team has a complete, self-hosted project management platform running without manual setup.

Why This Image Instead of Alternatives

Unlike OpenProject's SaaS offering, this image keeps all project data on your own AWS infrastructure - ideal for teams with data residency or sovereignty requirements. Unlike a manual Docker or source install, the appliance is pre-configured and supervised by systemd, eliminating hours of setup and ongoing maintenance scripting. And unlike multi-tool stacks combining separate issue trackers, wikis, and Gantt tools, OpenProject consolidates everything in one application, reducing tool sprawl and context switching.

    Application Stack

    • OpenProject installed from the official vendor package, run as a managed appliance
    • PostgreSQL database on a dedicated, independently resizable data disk - survives instance replacement
    • memcached for application data caching
    • Puma application server running the Rails app
    • GoodJob worker for background job processing
    • nginx reverse proxy publishing the application on port 80
    • A single systemd service supervises the entire stack, starting on boot and restarting on failure

    Project Management and Collaboration

Plan projects with interactive Gantt charts and shared roadmaps. Manage work with agile boards for Scrum and Kanban. Track tasks, features, and bugs as work packages with custom fields, statuses, and workflows. Report on time and cost across projects. Organise knowledge in per-project wikis, schedule and minute meetings, manage documents and budgets, and keep everyone aligned with notifications and a flexible role-based permission model. A REST API opens the platform to integration and automation with CI/CD pipelines, chat tools, and custom scripts.

    Security Baseline

Secure First Boot: On first launch, a one-shot service generates a fresh administrator password unique to that instance, applies it to the built-in administrator account, clears the forced password change prompt, and writes the password to a file only the root user can read. Default credentials and build-time data are removed - no shared or default login ships in the image.

Network and Encryption: The application is served on port 80 by default. TLS termination and custom domain configuration are supported as post-launch steps - cloudimg support can assist with certificate setup. AWS EBS encryption can be enabled on the data disk to encrypt project data at rest.

    Use Cases

    • Self-hosted project and portfolio management for regulated industries
    • Agile delivery with Scrum and Kanban boards for product teams
    • Work package and issue tracking for engineering organisations
    • Roadmap and release planning with interactive Gantt charts
    • Team collaboration with wikis, meetings, and document management
    • Time and cost reporting across multiple projects

    Getting Started

The OpenProject web interface is served on port 80. Sign in with the generated administrator credentials (found in the root-only file on the instance) to create projects, configure work package types and workflows, add users and roles, and start planning. The REST API is available on the same port for programmatic access.

    cloudimg Support

24/7 technical support by email and chat. Our engineers help with deployment, project and workflow configuration, user and role management, REST API integration, SMTP and email notifications, backups, database tuning, custom domains, TLS certificate setup, and scaling guidance.

    Highlights

    • Deploy a complete, self-hosted OpenProject platform on AWS without manual installation or configuration. The pre-built appliance launches as a production-ready system with PostgreSQL on a dedicated data disk that is independently resizable and survives instance replacement - ideal for teams that need data sovereignty and cannot use SaaS project management tools.
    • Consolidate project planning, agile delivery, and team collaboration in one application. Interactive Gantt charts for roadmap and release planning, Scrum and Kanban boards for sprint work, work package tracking with custom fields and workflows, per-project wikis, meeting management, document handling, time and cost reporting, and a REST API for CI/CD and automation integration.
    • Security-hardened first boot generates a unique administrator password for every instance and removes all default credentials. The password is stored in a root-only file. AWS EBS encryption can be applied to the data disk for encryption at rest. Backed by 24/7 technical support from cloudimg engineers via email and chat.

    Amazon Machine Image (AMI)

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

    Additional details

    Usage instructions

Connect via SSH on port 22 as the default login user for your operating system variant (the user guide lists it per variant). The OpenProject web interface is served on port 80: browse to http://<instance-public-ip>/ and sign in with user admin and the generated password. Retrieve the credentials with: sudo cat /root/openproject-aws-credentials.txt. OpenProject runs as a managed appliance supervised by a single systemd service (openproject.service); PostgreSQL, memcached, Puma and GoodJob listen on localhost only and nginx serves on port 80. The OpenProject REST API is served on the same port 80; create a per-user API key from the My account access token settings in the web interface. The OpenProject database lives on a dedicated data disk mounted at /var/lib/postgresql. The user guide explains how to add a custom domain and enable HTTPS with openproject reconfigure.
