Each dimension maps to a specific AWS instance size, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and capacity of the machine you pick. Options span burstable general-purpose instances (t2, t3, t3a families), compute-optimized instances (c1, c3, c4, c5), memory-optimized instances (r3, r5, r5d), and machine-learning instances (trn1, trn1n). Smaller instances handle light workloads; larger instances suit heavier processing. You are billed only for hours the instance runs. No upfront commitment applies.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
One unit is one running EC2 instance measured in hours. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size with set virtual CPU and memory. You launch one instance of the size you choose. The hourly software charge applies for every hour that instance runs.
The hourly software charge meters running time only. When you stop the instance, the software charge stops accruing. Stopped instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees for attached volumes, but those are separate AWS charges, not the software's hourly rate.
You choose the instance dimension when you launch. To change size, you stop the instance and relaunch on a different type. The new hourly rate then applies. There is no upfront commitment, so switching sizes only changes your going-forward hourly charge.
