You pay by the hour for CentOS Stream 7 (Hardened) running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. The software fee is tied to the instance type you select, so pricing scales with instance size and family. Smaller instances like t2 and t3 cost less per hour, while larger compute (c-series), memory (r- and x-series), storage (i- and d-series), and accelerated (g-, p-, inf-, trn-series) instances cost more. There is no commitment or upfront fee. You run as many hours as needed and stop charges by stopping the instance. EC2 infrastructure charges from AWS apply separately.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What exactly am I paying for in the hourly software fee?
You pay a per-hour software fee for the hardened CentOS Stream 7 image itself. This covers the operating system build with its updates, firewall settings, and network protocol configurations. The underlying Amazon EC2 compute, storage, and data transfer are billed separately by AWS.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or powered off?
The software fee meters only running instance-hours. When you stop the instance, the hourly software charge stops. A stopped instance may still accrue AWS storage fees for its attached volumes, but those are separate AWS charges, not the software fee shown here.
Why does the hourly rate change when I pick a bigger instance type?
Each instance type is a separate priced dimension. The software fee is set per instance type, so moving from a smaller to a larger instance in the same family, or to a higher-capacity family, changes the per-hour rate. You pay the rate tied to whichever type you run.
