Deploy a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster by using Microsoft® HPC Pack 2019 on AWS. HPC Pack allows you to create and manage HPC clusters consisting of Windows or Linux compute nodes, part-time servers, workstation computers, and dedicated or on-demand compute resources that are deployed in AWS.
This image contains the Windows Server 2019 Datacenter operating system with HPC Pack 2019 setup package to create the head node of an HPC Pack 2019 cluster or add additional compute nodes to an existing cluster in AWS. Choose to install using Microsoft SQL Server 2019 Express locally or use an existing SQL DB. We recommend using a VM size with at least 8 vCPUs. If you plan to add cluster compute nodes to the head node, the VM must be created in a AWS virtual network - VPC. Configure the network before creating the VM.

You pay by the hour for HPC Pack 2019 running on Windows Server 2019. The software cost is the same across all options; what changes is the underlying AWS EC2 instance you pick. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, from small general-purpose sizes up to large compute, memory, storage, and GPU-focused machines. Pricing scales with the instance you choose, so larger instances with more cores, memory, or accelerators cost more per hour. This lets you match the head node and compute node sizes to your cluster workload and add nodes as needed.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for each instance dimension?
Each dimension bills one running instance of that exact AWS EC2 type per hour. The instance runs Windows Server 2019 with HPC Pack 2019 preinstalled. One unit equals one active virtual machine of the chosen size, whether it serves as a head node or a compute node in your cluster.
Am I charged when a node is stopped or powered off?
Hourly software charges apply only while an instance runs. A stopped or powered-off node stops accruing hourly software charges. Underlying AWS storage costs for the instance may still apply while it is stopped. Meter counts running time only.
How does cost change when I add more nodes to the cluster?
Each node you add bills separately at the hourly rate for its instance type. A cluster mixes a head node and compute nodes, and every running instance meters independently. Total cost is the sum of all active instances, so it scales with node count and the sizes you choose.
