AD Connect will sync your on-premises AD or AWS Managed Active Directory with Azure Active Directory (Entra ID). This allows you to provide a common identity for your users for Office 365, Azure, and SaaS applications integrated with Azure AD.
AD Connect Sync Features
Use Azure AD connect with ADFS to provide single sign on for Office365 users (password hash sync, pass-through authentication, federation with AD FS, or federation with PingFederate)
Filtering options on what to sync, filtering based on domains, OUs, or attributes.
Password hash synchronization synchronizes the password hash in Active Directory to Azure AD. The end-user can use the same password on-premises and in the cloud but only manage it in one location. Since it uses your on-premises Active Directory or AWS AD as the authority, you can also use your own password policy.
Password writeback will allow your users to change and reset their passwords in the cloud and have your on-premises password policy applied.
Device writeback will allow a device registered in Azure AD to be written back to on-premises Active Directory so it can be used for conditional access
The prevent accidental deletes feature is turned on by default and protects your cloud directory from numerous deletes at the same time. By default it allows 500 deletes per run. You can change this setting depending on your organization size.

See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this software on. Pricing is not tiered by feature set; every instance runs the same AD Connect Server 2022 image. Instead, your hourly rate scales with the compute size you choose. Options range from small burstable instances like t3.nano and t2.micro up to memory-optimized, compute-optimized, GPU, and bare-metal instances such as u-24tb1.metal and x1.32xlarge. Larger instances cost more per hour because they provide more CPU, memory, or storage. You select the instance that matches your directory sync workload and expected load.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing actually cover for this software?
You pay for each hour the EC2 instance runs with the AD Connect Server 2022 image installed. The rate reflects the instance type you pick, such as t3.medium or m5.4xlarge. One hour equals one running instance-hour, counted per instance you launch.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when my instance is stopped?
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing software charges. You may still pay underlying AWS fees for attached storage or reserved capacity, but the software meter tracks running time only.
Do larger instances add features, or just more compute for my directory sync?
All instances run the same AD Connect Server 2022 image with identical features. Larger instances give you more CPU, memory, or storage for heavier sync loads. Since the software syncs your directory to cloud identity services on a scheduled cycle, most workloads run well on modest instance sizes.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
