What do the different instance families and sizes actually give me?
Each option maps to an AWS GPU instance. The g4dn, g6, and g6e families offer different GPU hardware generations. Sizes from xlarge up to 48xlarge add more GPU, CPU, and memory capacity. The g4dn.metal option runs on a dedicated physical server. Pick the instance that matches your simulation load.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or idle?
You pay for the software per hour only while the instance runs. The software is free, so no software charge accrues. A fully stopped instance stops running-time charges. However, AWS may still bill underlying storage for a stopped instance's attached volumes.
How does this hourly compute billing work since the software is free?
The software carries no licence fee. You pay only for the AWS GPU instance-hours you consume. Billing meters actual running time, with no upfront commitment. Larger instance sizes and newer families cost more per hour. This suits variable simulation workloads where you start and stop instances as needed.
