Business Compass LLC - DRM Video Protection Service

     Info
Business Compass LLC deploys a serverless DRM pipeline using AWS MediaConvert, Lambda, and CloudFront to protect your video content from piracy and reduce revenue leakage.

    Overview

Protect Your Video Content With Enterprise-Grade DRM

Content piracy costs media companies billions annually. Business Compass LLC, an AWS Advanced Consulting Partner with 50+ AWS certifications and multiple AWS Service Delivery competencies, deploys a fully serverless Video on Demand (VoD) DRM pipeline that prevents unauthorized playback and reduces revenue leakage.

Our team holds AWS Solutions Architect Professional, Developer Professional, Network Specialty, and ML Specialty certifications, bringing deep expertise in media workflows on AWS.

    How It Works

The pipeline leverages three core AWS services:

    • AWS MediaConvert - Transcodes source media and applies DRM encryption during output
    • AWS Lambda - Orchestrates the workflow with event-driven triggers, eliminating idle infrastructure costs
    • AWS CloudFront - Delivers protected content globally with low latency

Once DRM is applied, downloaded media will not play without proper license authorization, preventing unauthorized distribution of your content.

    Engagement Process

Phase 1: Discovery and Assessment (Week 1)

    • Requirements gathering session to understand your content catalog, delivery targets, and existing infrastructure
    • Review of your AWS environment and access configurations
    • Deliverable: Architecture design document and project plan

    Phase 2: Implementation (Weeks 2-3)

    • Deploy MediaConvert job templates with DRM encryption settings
    • Configure Lambda orchestration functions and S3 event triggers
    • Set up CloudFront distribution with signed URL or signed cookie policies
    • Deliverable: Fully deployed and configured DRM pipeline in your AWS account

Phase 3: Testing and Handoff (Week 4)

    • End-to-end testing with your content assets
    • Knowledge transfer session with your engineering team
    • Deliverable: Operations runbook, architecture documentation, and recorded training session

Use Case Example: Virtual Film Festivals

A virtual film festival needs to stream premium content to ticket holders during a limited screening window while preventing unauthorized downloads and redistribution. Our DRM pipeline encrypts each title during transcode, delivers it through CloudFront with time-limited access policies, and ensures that even if content is captured locally, it cannot be played without a valid license. This same pattern applies to eLearning platforms, fitness programs, sports broadcasting, and commercial video clip sales.

    Prerequisites

    • Active AWS account with permissions to create IAM roles, Lambda functions, S3 buckets, MediaConvert jobs, and CloudFront distributions
    • Source video assets in formats supported by AWS MediaConvert (MP4, MOV, MXF, etc.)
    • A DRM license server or third-party DRM provider (Widevine, FairPlay, or PlayReady)

    What Is Not Included

    • Player-side DRM integration or client application development
    • DRM license server hosting or management
    • Ongoing operational support beyond the handoff phase (available separately)

    Security and Compliance

Business Compass LLC has experience working with HIPAA, PCI DSS, NIST 800, and SOC 2 compliance frameworks. We apply AWS Well-Architected Framework principles to ensure your pipeline follows security best practices including least-privilege IAM policies, encryption at rest and in transit, and access logging.

    Industries Served

    Support Channels

    Engagement Overview

Once you schedule an appointment, our team will conduct a discovery session to understand your content catalog, AWS environment, and delivery requirements. From there, we provide an architecture design document and project plan before beginning implementation. The typical engagement spans approximately four weeks from kickoff to handoff.

    Buyer Responsibilities

During the engagement, your team will need to provide AWS account access with appropriate permissions, source video assets for testing, and access to your DRM license provider configuration. Our team handles all pipeline architecture, deployment, and configuration within your account.

    Post-Engagement Support

After handoff, you receive complete operations documentation and a recorded training session. For questions about using the deployed services, troubleshooting issues, or requesting refunds, please contact us via email or the support portal.
