Originally developed at Carnegie Mellon University, Autolab is an open-sourced platform for auto-grading programming assignments. Our vision is to bring the benefits of autograding to all programming and computer science classes, at the secondary- and university-levels.

Dimensions summary
The Autolab software is free to use, so you pay only for the AWS compute time that runs it. You pick from 14 EC2 instance types, and each is billed per hour. The choices split into two families. The t3 and t3a types offer general-purpose sizing, from small up to 2xlarge. The c6i types are compute-focused, from large up to 8xlarge. Larger sizes in each family provide more CPU and memory capacity. Your hourly rate scales with the instance size you select. No commitment term applies to the software itself.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The t3 and t3a families offer general-purpose CPU and memory for typical course loads. The c6i family focuses on compute power for heavier autograding workloads. All run the same free Autolab software. You pick the family and size that match your grading volume and student count.
You pay the hourly rate only while an instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing hourly compute charges. Underlying AWS storage for the stopped instance may still incur separate fees. The Autolab software itself is free, so no software charge applies at any time.
Both services run on the EC2 instance you launch, so you pay only the single hourly compute rate for that instance. Tango distributes grading jobs to virtual machines or containers. Running larger classes may require choosing a bigger instance size, which raises your hourly rate.
