GeoServer allows you to display your spatial information to the world. Implementing the Web Map Service (WMS) standard, GeoServer can create maps in a variety of output formats. OpenLayers, a free mapping library, is integrated into GeoServer, making map generation quick and easy. GeoServer is built on GeoTools, an open source Java GIS toolkit.
There is much more to Geo Server than nicely styled maps. GeoServer conforms to the Web Feature Service (WFS) standard, and Web Coverage Service (WCS) standard which permits the sharing and editing of the data that is used to generate the maps. GeoServer also uses the Web Map Tile Service standard to split your published maps into tiles for ease of use by web mapping and mobile applications.
GeoServer is a modular application with additional functionality added via extensions. An extensions for Web Processing Service open up a wealth of processing options, you can even write your own. Enable others to incorporate your data into their websites and applications, freeing your data and permitting greater transparency.

You pay by the hour for GeoServer running on Windows Server 2019. Pricing is tied to the AWS EC2 instance type you choose, so there are no fixed tiers or plans. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, from small burstable instances like t2 and t3 to compute-heavy, memory-heavy, storage-heavy, and GPU or accelerated families. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware cost more per hour. You run only what you need and stop billing when the instance stops. The software itself is open source, so charges reflect the running compute time.

What exactly does one hourly unit cover in this listing?
Each hourly unit covers one running EC2 instance of the size you select, preloaded with GeoServer and the Java runtime on Windows Server 2019. You pick one instance type per deployment. The hour count reflects how long that single instance runs.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. When you stop the instance, hourly software billing stops. Underlying AWS storage for the disk may still incur separate AWS fees, but the GeoServer software time meters only while the instance runs.
If I move to a larger instance type, how does my cost change?
You choose one instance type, and the hourly rate reflects that size. Switching to a family or size with more CPU, memory, storage, or GPU raises the hourly rate. The change is not automatic; you select the new type when you deploy or resize.
