You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen Amazon EC2 instance. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so the software cost changes based on the instance you select. Larger instances with more CPU and memory carry higher hourly rates than smaller ones. Options span burstable t2, t3, and t3a families for lighter workloads, plus general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5ad, m5n, and m5dn families for steadier needs. Bare metal (metal) instances are also available. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover, and what login do I use to access the instance?
Each unit is one running Amazon EC2 instance of the type you select. You are billed per hour that instance runs. After launch, you connect over SSH using the login name rocky, along with a private key you generate in advance.
Am I charged when I stop or power off an instance?
Software charges accrue only while an instance runs. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue hourly software fees. Underlying AWS storage or other resource fees may still apply while the instance exists, but the software meter counts running time only.
What drives the difference in hourly cost across the instance options?
The instance type you select drives the hourly software rate. Instances with more CPU and memory carry higher rates. Burstable t2, t3, and t3a families cost less per hour than the general-purpose m-series. Bare metal (metal) instances sit at the higher end. You pay one rate per running instance-hour.
