Each hourly unit is one running EC2 instance of the size you pick. The image runs MongoDB Server with the Mongosh Shell on Debian 12. You pay the software rate for every hour the instance runs, on top of standard AWS infrastructure charges.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when the instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running hours only. A stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You may still pay AWS for attached storage while the instance sits idle, but the software licence bills active runtime.
How does moving to a larger instance type change my hourly cost?
Each instance type carries its own hourly rate. Switching to an instance with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware raises the hourly rate. Smaller general-purpose sizes bill less per hour. The change takes effect when you launch the new instance type.
