You pay by the hour for the software running on an Amazon EC2 instance. There is no upfront commitment. Your cost depends on the EC2 instance type you choose, and each instance size carries its own hourly rate. The listing covers many instance families, including compute-optimized (C), general-purpose (M), memory-optimized (R and X), storage-optimized (D, I, H), and accelerated GPU/FPGA options (G, P, F, DL). Larger instances within a family cost more per hour because they provide more compute, memory, or storage. Pick the instance that fits your monitoring workload.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover, and does it include the underlying EC2 compute?
The hourly rate covers the Prometheus monitoring software packaged in the AMI. You also pay the standard AWS charge for the EC2 instance you run it on. These are separate charges. The software fee is tied to the instance type you launch.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or paused?
Hourly software charges apply only while the instance runs. A stopped instance does not accrue software fees. You may still pay AWS for attached storage, such as the disk holding your Prometheus data, even when the instance is off.
Why do larger instance sizes within the same family cost more per hour?
Each instance type has its own hourly software rate. Larger sizes provide more CPU, memory, or storage, so they carry a higher rate. Since Prometheus runs on autonomous single server nodes, you pick one instance sized to your metric volume and query load.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. Usage instructions
To get started, create an SSH tunnel into your instance as the ec2-user user with: ssh -i /path/to/mykey.pem <ec2-user@ec2-111-111-111-111.compute-1.amazonaws.com> -L9090:localhost:9090
Prometheus is already running and listening on port 9090.
Edit "/etc/prometheus/prometheus.yml" if you want to change options.
Restart server with "/etc/init.d/prometheus restart"
