You pay by the hour for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.9 packaged on an Amazon Machine Image. The many options here are not tiers or feature levels. Each one maps to a specific Amazon EC2 instance type you run the software on. Instance families cover general purpose, compute optimized, memory optimized, storage optimized, and GPU or accelerated workloads. Your rate scales with the instance size and family you choose. Larger instances generally cost more per hour. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit represent for each instance type option?
Each unit is one hour that a single Amazon EC2 instance of that type runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.9. The rate ties to the specific instance family and size you launch. Running two instances of the same type doubles the hourly charge, since each is metered separately.
Am I charged the hourly rate when my instance is stopped?
The software rate meters running time only. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Underlying AWS storage or other AWS resource fees may still apply while the instance is stopped, but those are separate from this listing's per-hour software charge.
If I move to a larger instance size, how does my charge change?
There are no tiers or upgrade steps. You simply launch the instance type you want, and that type's hourly rate applies for as long as it runs. Larger sizes and certain families generally carry higher hourly rates. Switching sizes means stopping one instance and starting another.
