You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run this VPN server on. The many dimensions are not feature tiers. Each one maps to a specific AWS instance type. Your hourly rate scales with the compute, memory, and network capacity of the instance you pick. Smaller options like t2.nano, t3.micro, and m5.large fit lighter workloads. Larger options like m5.24xlarge, m5n.metal, and m5dn.metal suit heavier traffic. The software runs the same across all sizes. You control cost by matching the instance to your expected VPN load.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly charge cover, and how is it counted?
Each dimension maps to one running EC2 instance of that type. You are billed per hour the instance runs. The rate reflects the instance's compute, memory, and network capacity. Running two instances bills each separately. You choose the instance type to match your VPN traffic needs.
Am I charged when the VPN instance is stopped?
Software charges meter running hours only. A stopped instance stops accruing hourly software fees. Stored data on attached volumes may still incur underlying AWS storage costs while the instance is off. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
Can I switch to a different instance type as my VPN load changes?
Yes. Each dimension is a separate instance type with its own hourly rate. You can stop your current instance and launch a size that better fits your traffic. The VPN software runs the same across all sizes, so your setup carries over.
