Attach an IAM instance role with the AWS-managed policies CloudWatchAgentServerPolicy and AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCore to activate CloudWatch and Session Manager. No AWS credentials are stored on the image.
Credentials: /opt/moodle/default-moodle-credentials.txt. Moodle code: /var/www/moodle (config.php there; update $CFG->wwwroot after moving to a domain). Site data: /var/moodledata. Apache vhost: /etc/apache2/sites-available/moodle.conf. TLS: /etc/ssl/certs/moodle-selfsigned.crt and /etc/ssl/private/moodle-selfsigned.key.
Ports: 22 (SSH/SFTP), 80 (HTTP, redirects to HTTPS), 443 (HTTPS).
Moodle is heavier than it looks and concurrency is spiky around deadlines. Evaluation and small cohorts: t3.medium. A typical school or department: m7i.large with gp3 storage. Large institutions or exam concurrency: m7i.xlarge with RDS and ElastiCache offload documented in the architecture guide.

You pay by the hour for the AWS EC2 instance that runs this Moodle image. Pricing is not tiered by features. Every instance type includes the same pre-installed software; you choose based on compute, memory, and storage needs. The options fall into families: burstable t2 and t3/t3a instances for lighter or variable workloads, general-purpose m7i, m7i-flex, and m7a instances, and memory-optimized r5 variants. Within each family, hourly cost scales with size, from nano and medium up through large multi-core and bare-metal instances. You are billed through your existing AWS account.

What do I actually get for the hourly rate on each instance type?
You get one running EC2 instance with the Moodle image pre-installed. It ships Moodle 5.x on Debian with Apache, PHP 8.4, MariaDB and phpMyAdmin. First boot installs Moodle, generates per-instance database credentials and a TLS certificate, and writes your admin login to a protected file.
Am I charged when I stop or pause the instance?
Hourly software charges accrue only while the instance runs. A stopped instance stops accruing hourly software charges. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the disk and any data kept while stopped. Charges resume when you start the instance again.
How do the software cost and the AWS infrastructure cost combine on my bill?
You pay one hourly rate for the software image plus the standard AWS charges for the chosen instance and its storage. Both meter running time and appear together through your existing AWS account. Larger instance types raise the hourly figure; the software is not billed per feature or user.
