You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance size you run. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so your cost scales with the compute, memory, and processing power you choose. Burstable options like the t2 and t3 families range from nano and micro through 2xlarge sizes. Memory-focused r3, r4, and r5 instances suit data-heavy stores. Compute-focused c3, c4, and c5 instances handle processing demands. General-purpose m3, m4, and m5 instances balance both. You select one instance type and pay for the hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit map to when I run OpenCart on an instance type?
Each unit is one running EC2 instance of the type you select, billed per hour. The deployment uses a single-instance model with OpenCart, the web server, PHP runtime, and the database all on that one instance. You pay for each hour that instance runs.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software fee meters running time only. A stopped instance does not accrue software charges. You may still owe underlying AWS storage fees for the attached volume while the instance is stopped, but that is separate from the software charge shown here.
How do I scale if my store outgrows the instance type I chose?
You scale vertically by resizing to a larger instance type, which changes your hourly rate to that type's rate. You can also scale horizontally with load-balanced multi-instance deployments, where each running instance bills separately at its own hourly rate.
