You pay by the hour for the software running on Amazon EC2 instances. Each dimension maps to a specific EC2 instance type, so your rate depends on the instance size you choose to run. Options span many families, including general-purpose (t2, m3, m4), compute-optimized (c3, c4), memory-optimized (r3, r4), storage-optimized (d2, h1, i2, i3, hs1, cr1), and GPU or accelerated types (g2, g3, p2, f1), plus bare-metal instances (m5n.metal, r5n.metal). Larger instance types carry higher hourly rates. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hourly unit cover for each instance type dimension?
Each unit is one hour that a single EC2 instance of the chosen type runs the software. You pay the rate tied to that specific instance type. Running two instances of the same type bills two hours per clock hour. Different instance types carry their own separate hourly rates.
Am I charged when my instance is stopped or paused?
The software rate meters running instance-hours only. A fully stopped instance stops accruing software charges. You may still owe underlying AWS fees, such as storage for attached volumes, but those are separate from this hourly software charge and billed by AWS.
How does my bill change if I switch to a different instance type?
Your software rate follows the instance type you run at any given time. Moving to a different type applies that type's hourly rate for the hours it runs. There is no upfront commitment, so you can change instance types and pay only for what each one runs.
