Multi-Region Active-Active Architecture on AWS with Data Residency

     Info
Techanek designs and implements active-active multi-region architecture on AWS for teams carrying data residency or sovereignty obligations. Covers region routing, replication boundaries, failover and audit evidence. Delivered in 3 to 12 weeks with a rehearsed failover and measured RTO and RPO.

    Overview

    What this engagement delivers

Techanek designs and builds multi-region architecture on AWS for organisations that must keep specific data inside specific jurisdictions while still serving users globally. You finish with a target architecture that names exactly which data crosses a region boundary and which does not, an implemented second region, a rehearsed failover with measured recovery objectives, and the documentation an auditor or an enterprise procurement team will accept as evidence.

    Who this is for

Platform and infrastructure teams facing a residency, sovereignty or resilience requirement they cannot meet with a single region. Typical triggers are an enterprise customer demanding in-country data storage, expansion into a market with a data localisation law, a regulator or certification body asking for a tested recovery capability, or latency complaints from users on the far side of the world from your only region.

    Scope and AWS services covered

Amazon Route 53 with latency and failover routing, Amazon CloudFront, Lambda@Edge or CloudFront Functions, AWS WAF, AWS Shield Advanced, Amazon ECS on AWS Fargate, Amazon EKS, Amazon Aurora Global Database, Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB Global Tables, Amazon ElastiCache, Amazon S3 Cross-Region Replication, AWS Backup, AWS Key Management Service with per region keys, Amazon CloudWatch, AWS CloudTrail, AWS Config and AWS Resilience Hub.

    Delivery approach and timeline

Phase 1, Data classification and residency boundary, 5 business days. Inventory of data domains, classification against your obligations, and an explicit written statement of what replicates across regions and what does not. This is the phase that determines whether the rest of the design is compliant.

Phase 2, Target architecture and cost model, 10 business days. Region topology, routing strategy, replication design per data tier, identity and session handling across regions, key management boundary, projected steady state and failover cost.

Phase 3, Implementation, 15 to 40 business days depending on dimension. Second region build through Terraform, replication configuration, routing and edge logic, observability across both regions, and progressive traffic shift.

Phase 4, Failover rehearsal and evidence, 10 business days. Game day with a controlled regional failover, measured RTO and RPO against target, runbook validation, control map, and the evidence pack.

    Deliverables

Data classification and residency boundary statement, written to be shown to an auditor Target architecture document with diagrams for steady state, degraded state and failover Terraform modules provisioning both regions from a single codebase Implemented second region with replication configured per data tier Routing and edge configuration, including home region resolution where required Cross region observability, alerting and health checks Failover and failback runbooks, tested rather than theoretical Game day report with measured RTO and RPO against the agreed target Control map aligned to ISO 27001 and to your applicable residency obligations Steady state and failover cost model

    Highlights

    • Residency by design. An explicit data classification and replication boundary, so regulated records stay inside their region while control plane and routing traffic operate globally.
    • A pattern already in production. Built for an AI platform running active-active across the Mumbai and Sydney regions, with in-region data tiers, edge based home region routing and ISO 27001 aligned governance controls.
    • Failover you have actually tested. A rehearsed regional failover with measured RTO and RPO, plus the runbooks, control map and evidence pack your auditors and enterprise customers will ask for.
