If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for each running instance, with no upfront commitment. The price you pay depends only on the Amazon EC2 instance type you choose. The dimensions map to standard EC2 families and sizes: burstable t2 and t3/t3a types, and general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5dn, m5n, and m5ad types. Within each family, sizes scale from nano and micro up through metal, so hourly cost rises as you pick larger instances with more compute, memory, and storage. Pick the size that matches your workload, and stop paying when you stop the instance.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get when I launch one of these instances?
You get a virtual machine running Minimal Amazon Linux 2, a lightweight operating system build. The instance size you pick sets its compute, memory, and storage. You connect over SSH using the ec2-user login and a private key you generate. The IP address appears in your Amazon account.
Am I charged when I stop or pause an instance?
The software charge meters running hours only. When you stop an instance, the hourly software charge stops accruing. You pay only while the instance runs. Note that any underlying AWS storage attached to a stopped instance may still incur separate AWS fees, billed by AWS, not by this software license.
Does moving to a larger instance size change all my charges or just the new one?
Each running instance is billed on its own hourly rate for the size you chose. Charges are not pooled across a tier. If you launch a larger size, only that instance bills at the higher rate. Smaller instances you keep running continue at their own rates. You can mix sizes freely.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
