Overview

Product video
KARL is a Kubernetes Virtualization and DaaS platform designed to run and govern virtual machines, Windows desktops and container-based workloads from a single operational layer.
Unlike generic infrastructure governance tools, KARL combines its own KVM-based runtime with built-in services for desktop delivery, secure access, directory integration, software-defined networking, storage, data protection, observability and runtime security. This allows organizations to consolidate functions that are often split across separate hypervisor, VDI, access, backup and security products.
On AWS, KARL can be deployed through AMI and CloudFormation-based deployment models, using supported EC2 instance families and configurations that provide the virtualization capabilities required by the KARL runtime. Once deployed, infrastructure teams can provision Linux and Windows VMs, pooled Windows desktops, application environments and governed workload pools with centralized control over compute, networking, storage, access and security.
KARL includes a secure RDP Gateway for desktop and VM access, directory services based on Samba Active Directory concepts, group policy integration, software-defined networking, workload placement visibility, connectivity diagnostics, file services, backup workflows and Warden-based security capabilities for compromised desktop recovery.
The platform is designed for enterprises, service providers and system integrators that need to modernize legacy virtualization and VDI stacks, support VMware or Citrix transition projects, deliver secure workspaces, operate governed customer environments and reduce the operational fragmentation caused by managing hypervisors, VDI brokers, access gateways, storage, backup and security tools separately.
KARL is especially relevant where customers need one platform for virtual machines, Windows desktops and containers, with centralized governance, AWS deployment support and operational visibility across the workload lifecycle.
Highlights
- Run Windows and Linux VMs plus pooled Windows desktops on one Kubernetes platform using KARL's own KVM runtime, with secure RDP Gateway, 2FA access, directory services and GPO integration.
- Replace fragmented hypervisor, VDI, access and infrastructure tools with a unified platform for compute, networking, storage, secure access, observability, file services and workload governance.
- Protect desktop and workload environments with SMB/NFS file services, per-file audit, ransomware lockout, scheduled backup to Amazon S3 and Warden-assisted recovery for compromised desktops.

64-bit (x86) Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
Version release notes
Karl Platform 1.7.0 (golden AMI BYOL)
- Based on Karl OS 1.7.0
- OS autoinstall only; Karl cluster provisioning deferred to launch (AUTO_PROVISION=false)
- Default SSH user: ubuntu (EC2 key pair / user-data)
- Buyer provision parameters via EC2 user-data writing /etc/karl/autoprovision.env (CloudFormation delivery planned)
- Recommended: attach additional EBS data volumes for Longhorn; prefer instance sizes >= 4 vCPU / 16 GiB for control-plane workloads
Additional details
Usage instructions
- Subscribe and launch the AMI in a supported Region.
- Choose an instance type with at least 4 vCPU and 16 GiB RAM (m6i.xlarge or larger recommended). Root volume defaults to 80 GiB; add data volumes as needed.
- Open security group for SSH (22) and ports required by your Karl profile.
- Optionally provide cloud-init user-data writing /etc/karl/autoprovision.env with AUTO_PROVISION=true and KARL_PROVISION_* values.
- SSH as ubuntu with your EC2 key pair. If AUTO_PROVISION=false, complete Karl provisioning on first boot (TUI).
- After provisioning, open the Karl Console URL reported by karl-provision.

Support
Vendor support
KARL provides technical support for properly licensed KARL Products covered by an active, paid Maintenance / Support Plan and deployed in supported configurations. Support is available through the KARL ticketing/web portal and email at support@karl-technology.com ; telephone support may be available where included in the subscribed plan. Support covers KARL platform components included in the customer's plan, including control plane/orchestration, management APIs, update mechanisms, infrastructure, runtime, virtualization/execution components, node agents, KARL-managed platform services, and standard upgrade, rollback, vulnerability mitigation and security remediation procedures. It excludes customer applications/workloads, third-party software or services, custom developments, unofficial modifications, modules outside the subscribed plan, and customer-side monitoring, on-call operations or patching. Support tiers are 8/5 and 24/7. For 8/5, business hours are Monday-Friday, 09:00-18:00 CET/CEST, excluding Italian public holidays. For 24/7, Severity 1 and 2 cases run continuously; Severity 3 and 4 follow business hours unless otherwise agreed. Initial response targets:
- Sev 1: 3 hours (24/7) / 3 business hours (8/5)
- Sev 2: 5 hours (24/7) / 5 business hours (8/5)
- Sev 3: 6 business hours
- Sev 4: 8 business hours Update targets:
- Sev 1: every 2 hours (24/7) / 2 business hours (8/5), or as agreed
- Sev 2: every 4 hours (24/7) / 4 business hours (8/5), or as agreed
- Sev 3: every 8 business hours
- Sev 4: within 2 business days These are acknowledgement and case-update targets, not guaranteed resolution times. Resolution depends on technical complexity, the customer environment, available workarounds and customer cooperation.
