What does one hourly unit map to when I run FreeBSD on an EC2 instance?
Each dimension maps to one specific EC2 instance type, billed per running hour. The unit is the instance itself, not per user or per core. You are charged for each hour that instance runs. The FreeBSD software carries no license fee, so the rate reflects the instance class and size only.
Am I charged for an instance that is stopped or powered off?
The software charge meters running instance-hours. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. Note that underlying AWS storage for attached volumes and ZFS data may still incur separate AWS fees while the instance is stopped.
What determines my hourly cost across the different instance dimensions?
Cost follows the instance type you select. Small general-purpose sizes carry lower hourly rates. Memory-optimized, compute-optimized, storage, GPU, and bare-metal instances carry rates matching their hardware. Only one instance dimension applies per running instance, so your bill tracks the hardware you chose, multiplied by hours run.
