You pay by the hour for this Container Host image, billed per running instance. Pricing maps to the arm64 EC2 instance type you launch for your EKS nodes. Options span general-purpose (m-series, t4g), compute-optimized (c-series), memory-optimized (r-series, x8g), and storage-optimized (i-series, im4gn) families across multiple generations. Sizes range from nano and medium up to 24xlarge. Larger instances carry more vCPU and memory, so their hourly rate rises accordingly. You select the instance type that fits your workload and pay only for the hours each node runs.

What is a Container Host image, and what does it run on each EKS node?
The Container Host is a minimal Linux image built to run containers on your EKS worker nodes. It includes only essential components like the Linux kernel, systemd, and glibc. This reduces the attack surface. Each node you launch runs one instance and is billed by the hour.
Am I charged when an EKS node is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software charge applies only while a node runs. Fully powered-off instances do not accrue software charges. Stopped or hibernated instances may still incur underlying AWS storage fees, but the software license meters running time per node.
Does my cost change automatically if I switch to a larger instance type?
Yes. Your hourly rate matches whichever arm64 instance type each node runs. Launching a larger size, such as moving from a 2xlarge to a 24xlarge, raises the hourly rate for that node. You control this by selecting the instance type per node.

Usage instructions
This AMI is intended for Amazon EKS worker nodes (managed node groups or self-managed node groups). Deploy it by creating a new Amazon EKS cluster or node group using eksctl and following the documentation for custom AMI support:
Retrieve the AMI ID for your region, for example for us-east-1:
Configure eksctl to use the Chainguard Container Host AMI by setting "amiFamily: AmazonLinux2023" and "ami: ami-01234567" for the node group in the configuration file. Replace the AMI ID with the one retrieved in step 1.
If you enabled SSH access via eksctl, you can connect to the instances in your node group as "ec2-user".
