See AWS Free Tier for more details. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the software running on your chosen EC2 instance type. Each dimension maps to one specific instance type, so the hourly rate scales with the size and family of hardware you pick. Smaller instances like t3.small carry lower hourly rates, while large, metal, and GPU or memory-optimized instances carry higher rates. You are not locked into one size; you select the instance type that fits your workload. Every option includes the same Oracle Linux 10 image and 24/7 support. There is no upfront commitment, and you pay only for hours used.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly software rate cover, and what runs on the instance?
The rate covers the Oracle Linux 10 image plus 24/7 support with a 24-hour response commitment. The image includes AWS CLI, CloudWatch Agent, Systems Manager Agent, Cloud Init, and a first-boot package update script. You choose the EC2 instance type your workload needs.
Am I charged the hourly software fee when my instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running instance-hours. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software charge. You may still see underlying AWS storage fees for the attached disk, but those are separate from this software rate.
How does the hourly cost change if I switch to a larger instance type?
Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. Larger, metal, GPU, or memory-optimized types carry higher rates than small ones like t3.small. There is no upfront commitment, so switching types simply changes the per-hour charge going forward.
