Overview
Ubuntu Pro EKS is an Ubuntu AWS Machine Image, optimized for EKS with 10 years of security maintenance, covering not only the OS but also its 3rd party open source repositories. Clusters built from this AMI can also benefit from using this extended security maintenance in an unlimited number of containers running on the cluster. This allows teams to consume freely open source software while meeting internal security, governance and compliance requirements.
Ubuntu Pro EKS remains fully-compatible with Ubuntu EKS 22.04 LTS, adding additional security, enabled by default, as well as compliance and management tools in a form suitable for small to large-scale Linux operations.

These images are based on the official Ubuntu Minimal LTS, including the custom Ubuntu-aws optimized kernel with Ubuntu Pro kernel livepatch and ESM enabled. They have been built specifically for the EKS service, therefore are not intended as general OS images.
To deploy Ubuntu worker nodes on EKS, you can use eksctl, EC2 Launch templates on the EKS web console, Cloudformation templates and other mechanisms (see "How to deploy Ubuntu Pro worker nodes on EKS" below).

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for Ubuntu Pro 22.04 LTS running on your Amazon EKS worker nodes. Pricing is billed per EC2 instance type, so each dimension maps to a specific instance size and family. There is no upfront commitment; charges accrue based on the hours each instance runs. Rates scale with the instance you choose. Smaller instances like t2.nano and m1.small carry lower hourly rates. Large and specialized instances, including bare-metal, high-memory, GPU, and accelerator types, carry higher rates. You select instances to match your workload's compute, memory, and hardware needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each unit is one EC2 worker node running Ubuntu Pro 22.04 LTS. You are billed per hour for each node, matched to its instance type. A node using an r6idn.24xlarge is billed at that instance type's rate. Each running instance meters separately, so total cost adds up across all active nodes.
The hourly software charge accrues only while an instance runs. When you scale down or stop a node, its Ubuntu Pro charge stops accruing. Restarting or adding nodes resumes charges automatically. Underlying AWS storage or compute fees may still apply separately, but the software meter tracks running hours only.
Ubuntu Pro adds security maintenance, hardening tools, compliance profiles, and automated patching. Canonical provides vulnerability fixes across the OS and infrastructure, with support available at the application layer. The hourly charge covers this coverage for the node's chosen instance type while it runs.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest it is suggested to manually configure your Security Group/Firewall settings. The 1-Click Security Group opens only port 22 so that you can access your instance via ssh using login 'ubuntu'. If you chose the 1-Click Security Group, you may change it later to enable applications using the AWS Console or API.
