Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue software charges. Underlying AWS fees, such as storage for the volume, may still apply while the instance is stopped, but the image charge tracks active hours.
What is one billing unit here, and how do I count my cost across several instances?
One unit is one running instance-hour. Each EC2 instance you launch bills its own hourly rate based on its size. Running several instances adds their hourly rates together. Larger instance types carry higher hourly rates because they provide more CPU, memory, or storage.
