Overview
Ubuntu Pro EKS is an Ubuntu AWS Machine Image, optimized for EKS with 10 years of security maintenance, covering not only the OS but also its 3rd party open source repositories. Clusters built from this AMI can also benefit from using this extended security maintenance in an unlimited number of containers running on the cluster. This allows teams to consume freely open source software while meeting internal security, governance and compliance requirements.
Ubuntu Pro EKS remains fully-compatible with Ubuntu EKS 22.04 LTS, adding additional security, enabled by default, as well as compliance and management tools in a form suitable for small to large-scale Linux operations.

These images are based on the official Ubuntu Minimal LTS, including the custom Ubuntu-aws optimized kernel with Ubuntu Pro kernel livepatch and ESM enabled. They have been built specifically for the EKS service, therefore are not intended as general OS images.
To deploy Ubuntu worker nodes on EKS, you can use eksctl, EC2 Launch templates on the EKS web console, Cloudformation templates and other mechanisms.

Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for each Arm-based EC2 instance running Ubuntu Pro 22.04 LTS with EKS 1.32. Pricing is not tiered. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific instance type, and your rate follows the size and family you pick. Smaller instances like t4g.nano cost less per hour than large ones like x8g.metal-48xl. Charges scale with how many instances you run and how long they run. You can mix instance types across your cluster. The Ubuntu Pro subscription adds security maintenance, hardening, and compliance tools on top of the base Ubuntu operating system.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each unit is one running Arm-based EC2 instance of the matching type, such as t4g.medium or c8g.24xlarge. Every node in your cluster counts separately. The rate follows the instance family and size you select. You are billed per hour that instance runs Ubuntu Pro.
The software charge meters running instance-hours only. Fully stopped nodes do not accrue Ubuntu Pro charges. If your cluster scales down worker nodes, billing for those instances stops. Restarting or adding nodes resumes charges automatically at the rate for each instance type.
Each instance bills independently at the hourly rate for its own type. There is no bundle or tier across the cluster. Your total is the sum of each instance's rate multiplied by its running hours. Mixing large and small types simply adds each line separately to one invoice.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest it is suggested to manually configure your Security Group/Firewall settings. The 1-Click Security Group opens only port 22 so that you can access your instance via ssh using login 'ubuntu'. If you chose the 1-Click Security Group, you may change it later to enable applications using the AWS Console or API.
