IBM Consulting BEAM IoT Water & Gas on AWS

     Info
IBM Consulting's BEAM IoT is an open, flexible, and modular system, a platform for Meter/Sensor Data Acquisition and Telecontrol. BEAM IoT was born as an integrator of the data required for complete “remote reading” and “remote management” of the field equipment mainly in the gas, and water domains. It is designed using microservices and open-source standards and orchestrated by a hybrid architecture based on AWS EKS.

    Overview

BEAM IoT is a Meter/Sensor Data Acquisition and Telecontrol system that collects data from every device installed in the field on multiple technologies. Through a single platform, customers are able to acquire data from different types of devices (meters, sensors, probes) and through different technologies (LoraWan, NB-IOT, GPRS, cellular network, wired networks, etc.) storing them within a single Data Lake to feed advanced Business Analytics, Predictive and Machine Learning systems.

BEAM IoT is an open, flexible, and modular system, designed using microservices and open source standards and orchestrated by a hybrid architecture based on AWS EKS. This IoT Platform for the remote management of water and gas meters represent the heart of IBM’s offer to utilities; with the IoT Lab in Bari dedicated to evolving and managing Beam IoT for large and small customers, adapting them to each one’s needs.

An IoT Platform to be considered an excellent system must respect these four key technical points: scalability, business continuity, partitioned database, and periodical storage.

    • Scalability: allows the system to manage a large and ever-increasing number of devices installed in the field.
    • Business continuity: allows the customer to have no interruption or in general moments in which the system does not work or does not work correctly.
    • Partitioned database: allows the system to work efficiently when saving or searching data in the database.
    • Periodical storage: allows the system to always work with the latest data and not on historical data which can be used for analytics, predictive and machine learning use cases.

It is developed in micro-services and developed on AWS EKS (like orchestrator). The main features of the platform are as follows: • Acquisition of measurements and load curves. on a periodic and on-demand basis. • Synchronization of meters and concentrators. • Supply management (valve or breaker opening/closing). • Remote SW update in unicast and broadcast. • Management of both massive and punctual commands (with over 50 different types of work orders). • Alarm, diagnostic and fraud detection. • Rate management. • Control Room for reactive maintenance. • Dashboards and reports to monitor consumptions, work orders and CO2e emissions.

Beam IOT is multi-tenant, multi-tech, multi devices, multi-services:

    • multi-tenant: because with a single instance it can manages more companies.
    • multi-devices: because currently it manages over 150 different typologies of meters (manufacturer, model, and firmware version)
    • multi-industry/services: because includes different services on the same platform.
    • multi-technologies: because the data ingestion is possible with different communication technologies, direct (or point-to-point) such as: GPRS, NB-IoT, WiFi; and not direct (or point-to-multipoint) such as LoRaWAN.

The Beam IoT solution for Smart Metering has been successfully adopted and used by numerous customers over the past decade. These include some of the most important players in the distribution of gas and water, of which some significant data aggregated by sector are reported:

    • Italy Gas: with a total of over 2.5 million meters managed overall and a growth of around 20 thousand new meters/month among all customers.
    • Italy Water: for a total of 250 thousand meters managed overall, with an increase of around 200 thousand new meters by 2025.

    Highlights

    • The Beam IoT platform drives productivity by seamlessly integrating core processes—Meter-to-Cash (M2C), Order-to-Service (O2S), and Case-to-Resolve (C2R). With built-in monitoring and reporting across all areas, it empowers efficient management from data acquisition to device installation and field operations, streamlining business performance end-to-end.
    • The Beam IoT platform supports smart gas and water meter management and is in production with multiple clients, managing millions of devices—like 2.5M gas meters in Italy. Its modular, cloud-based design ensures scalability, continuity, and adaptability, optimizing management and maintenance costs and boosting productivity for utilities.
