If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour based on the AWS EC2 instance size you run. Each dimension maps to one instance type, and the software runs as a virtual machine you launch from your AWS account. Options span burstable t2, t3, and t3a families for lighter or variable workloads, and general-purpose m3, m4, m5, m5a, m5d, m5ad, m5n, and m5dn families for steadier compute. Larger instance sizes offer more CPU and memory, so hourly cost rises with capacity. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billing unit represent for each hourly rate?
Each unit is one running virtual machine of a specific AWS EC2 instance type. You launch the machine from your AWS account and pay for every hour it runs. Each instance type has its own hourly rate based on its CPU and memory capacity.
Am I charged when the virtual machine is stopped or paused?
The software charge meters running hours only. When you stop the instance, the hourly software fee stops accruing. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage for a stopped instance. To end all software charges, terminate the instance.
How do I connect to the virtual machine after I launch it?
Find the instance IP address in your AWS account. Generate a private key file, then connect over SSH using a client of your choice. Log in with the user ec2-user. This access method is the same across every instance type you choose.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
