Kong Konnect is the unified API platform, delivered as a service, that can manage: Kong Gateway, Kong AI Gateway*, Kong Event Gateway*, Kong Ingress Controller, and Kong Mesh*. This listing uses one usage-based dimension. You pay as you go, with usage metered inside Konnect and invoiced monthly. There are no fixed seats or upfront commitments. Instead, your bill reflects the resources and traffic you actually consume. Metered items include gateway control planes, published APIs, developer portals, API request volume, and proxied AI models. Resource-based metrics are tracked hourly and prorated across the month. Invoices are calculated at the end of each calendar month and charged at the start of the next. As your usage grows, your monthly charges scale with it.

What do you like best about the product?
The biggest benefit for me is the reduced API latency, which is especially useful when handling millions of requests per day. It also supports both REST and GraphQL. Overall, the standout feature is its performance.
What do you dislike about the product?
The biggest con, in my opinion, is the high licensing cost. For a small organization with a small team, this can easily become one of the largest expenses. Also, if the team doesn’t have prior gateway experience, it can be difficult for them to get hands-on and get up to speed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It has helped our organization manage high throughput and address latency issues. It also feels more secure. Another major factor is scalability. For a mid-level organization, it’s amazing to have Kong Konnect.

What do you like best about the product?
I really appreciate how Kong Konnect takes on cross-cutting concerns and lets the gateway manage OAuth2 and rate limiting, which means I don't have to code them into every service. It's incredibly freeing to know that new services can inherit a uniform security posture and be production-ready without my having to code bespoke protections. The speed of Kong Konnect is impressive, and watching the Kong Ingress Controller automate routing configuration through Kubernetes-native resources and GitOps is a real turning point for me. The OIDC and Rate Limiting plugins saved us from a long stretch of custom development and secured new services without affecting performance. I also value the plugin ecosystem, which allows me to extend the gateway's capabilities through configuration rather than code, making enhancements a simple reviewed commit instead of a major project. The setup was pretty smooth overall.
What do you dislike about the product?
My reservation lies with the drift away from a fully supported open-source model. It nudges teams toward Enterprise and Konnect licensing sooner than planned, and for smaller projects, that shift carries real overhead. Weighing cost against the production-grade features we cannot do without has complicated our longer-term roadmap more than I would like. The pull toward Enterprise licensing forces me to weigh production-grade features against cost earlier than I would like, which means some smaller client environments that could once ride on open source now face a spending decision before they scale, complicating how I sequence fabric rollouts across the roadmap.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Kong Konnect to offload authentication and rate-limiting tasks, allowing new services to become production-ready quickly. Its automation with Kubernetes and GitOps streamlines routing and security configuration, freeing me to extend the network instead of rebuilding protections repeatedly.

it takes time for new users to become fully comfortable with all configuration and Mgt. options and finding some specific settings , troubleshooting issues , time consuming for doing some settings due to multiple screens

What do you like best about the product?
The best thing I like about Kong Konnect is that it simplifies API management and has a clean interface. With Kong Konnect, I’ve reduced manual data transfer between my CRM and marketing platforms, which has made my workflow more efficient and better organized.
What do you dislike about the product?
There’s nothing I dislike about this product now. Still, when I first started using it, I found it pretty challenging because it has so many features that needs experience in API category., and it took me some time to figure out how to use them properly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps reduce manual work by connecting different tools and keeping all the data flowing smoothly between systems. This has made my workflows more organized and efficient, and it also saves me time when I’m managing a large amount of lead data.

What is our primary use case?
Kong Konnect serves as my main API gateway. A specific example of how I use Kong Konnect as an API gateway in my organization is that we host all of our Node.js microservices as REST APIs, and these REST APIs are published in Kong Konnect so that external services can access them.
Kong Konnect supports other functionalities such as developer discovering API specifications, traffic routing, and rate limiting and authentication, which are also used in our organization.
What is most valuable?
In my experience, the best features Kong Konnect offers include its integration with our Node.js microservices, centralized access for multiple teams to the APIs, and support for rate limiting, authentication, and monitoring of API usage.
The centralized access for multiple teams helps our organization day-to-day by encouraging collaboration as other teams are able to discover published APIs across the organization, and it saves time in terms of specification and in terms of request and response structure.
Kong Konnect has positively impacted our organization by providing centralized access for our APIs for internal and external partners, enforcing authentication and rate limiting at a gateway level, and enabling discoverability of API documentation through Kong Konnect.
What needs improvement?
Kong Konnect can be improved by simplifying pricing to make it more transparent, simplifying the user experience so that non-technical people can also configure API specifications, and by supporting more enterprise plugins and third-party integrations to make it more robust.
Regarding other improvements Kong Konnect needs, based on our AI integration, there may be some improvements, but as of now, the points that have been mentioned are adequate.

I have been working in my current field for over six years. I have been using Kong Konnect for over a year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Kong Konnect is stable based on the functionalities we currently use.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Kong Konnect scales well horizontally; multiple instances of different services can be spun up, and traffic can be routed. Kong Konnect is scalable for the functionality that we use, which is redirecting traffic to our Node.js microservices.
How are customer service and support?
Customer support is useful, and documentation is quite clear. Overall, we are happy with it.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Previously, we explored MuleSoft and Boomi as our API gateways, but we switched to Kong Konnect to utilize its AI capabilities.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment; with more integration of external partners to our APIs via Kong Konnect, there has been an increase in revenue and overall less time spent onboarding them to our API functionalities.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Regarding my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing, I find that the pricing can be made more transparent and more helpful for enterprise integration.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing Kong Konnect, I evaluated alternatives including AWS API Gateway as well as Apache APISIX.
What other advice do I have?
We are planning to integrate AI and LLMs, which are also supported by Kong Konnect, so this might prove useful in the future.
Since using Kong Konnect, I have observed less time in onboarding external partners for our internal APIs, less time in exposing our APIs with proper authentication and rate limiting, and more collaboration for discovering API specifications across platforms.
My advice for others looking into using Kong Konnect is to decide to use it based on the throughput that is actually required and consider the total cost of ownership as well. I recommend starting with a proof of concept so that the AI functionalities can be utilized first and to see if they provide value to the organization. I would rate this review as a seven out of ten.
