Each hourly rate covers one running EC2 instance of the type you pick. It includes CentOS 9 with a bundled security agent. The rate maps to a specific instance size, so a larger instance carries a higher hourly rate. You pay for each instance you run.
The software charge meters running hours only. A fully stopped instance does not accrue hourly software fees. Underlying AWS storage or other resources may still bill separately while stopped. When you restart the instance, hourly charges for the software resume automatically.
Pricing is not tiered. Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. Moving from a nano or micro size to a large, xlarge, or metal configuration raises your hourly rate. You change instance types by relaunching on the size you want; the new rate applies to that instance.
