It is the integration and collaboration point for AlmaLinux to its upstreams as well, such as CentOS Stream and Fedora.
Highlights
- AlmaLinux OS Amazon Machine Images include Cloud-init, AWS Systems Manager Agent (SSM Agent) and EC2 Instance Connect support. The default cloud user is set up to be "ec2-user". After the machine is running, you will be able to log in as this user and run privileged commands with sudo.
- All AlmaLinux OS images are built with SELinux set to enforcing mode.

The software itself is free, so you pay only for the AWS arm64 (Graviton) EC2 instance you run it on. Each dimension is a separate instance type, billed hourly. You are not choosing between software tiers or feature levels. Instead, you pick the instance size and family that fits your workload. Choices span general purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and graphics families, from small shared instances up to bare-metal servers. Your hourly cost scales with the size and capability of the instance you select. You can start and stop instances as needed.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The operating system carries no software charge. Every AMI is free of charge regardless of deployment channel. You pay only the underlying AWS charge for the arm64 (Graviton) EC2 instance type you launch, billed per hour of running time.
Hourly charges apply to running instance-hours only. A stopped or powered-off instance does not accrue instance-hour charges. You may still pay AWS for attached storage while the instance is stopped, but the instance-hour meter counts running time only.
Each dimension is one specific arm64 (Graviton) EC2 instance type. The name encodes the family and size, such as compute-optimized at a set number of vCPUs and memory. Metal names run on a full physical server. You are billed per hour that instance runs.
