You pay by the hour for each Amazon EC2 instance that runs Minimal Ubuntu Pro 24.04 LTS. Each dimension maps to one specific EC2 instance type, from small burstable sizes up to large memory, compute, storage, GPU, and bare-metal machines. The Ubuntu Pro charge is added on top of your EC2 cost and scales with the instance's size, since it is based on the number of vCPUs. Larger instances carry a higher hourly rate. You pick the instance type that fits your workload and pay only for the hours you use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What determines the Ubuntu Pro hourly rate for a given instance type?
The Ubuntu Pro charge is based on the number of vCPUs in the instance and metered by the second. Larger instances have more vCPUs, so they carry a higher hourly rate. This lets pricing scale with instance size across small burstable machines up to bare-metal ones.
Am I charged the Ubuntu Pro fee when an instance is stopped or paused?
The Ubuntu Pro charge meters running time, so a fully stopped instance does not accrue the software fee. Charges apply per running instance-hour. Note that underlying AWS storage costs for a stopped instance are separate and are not part of this listing's pricing.
How does the Ubuntu Pro charge combine with my Amazon EC2 costs on the bill?
You pay two charges that add together per instance-hour: the standard EC2 instance cost and the Ubuntu Pro software charge on top. Both meter the same running hours. For larger instances, the EC2 cost usually dominates, while the Ubuntu Pro fee scales with vCPU count.
