You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run this preconfigured image on. The eight options are all instance types, not feature tiers. They span t3, m5, m6i, r5, and r6i families in large and xlarge sizes. Larger sizes and memory-optimized families carry higher hourly rates. You choose the instance that fits your workload. Billing runs only while the instance is active, with no long-term commitment. If the image is not running, there is no software charge.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do the instance sizes and families mean for the resources I get?
Each option maps to an AWS EC2 instance type. The t3 and m5/m6i families balance compute and memory, while r5 and r6i are memory-optimized for larger data sets. Large sizes give fewer vCPUs and RAM than xlarge sizes. You pick the instance matching your database load.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or not running?
No software charge applies while the image is not running. Billing meters only active instance-hours. Stopped or powered-off instances do not accrue the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage or resource fees from AWS may still apply separately for stopped instances.
Is there any upfront commitment, or do I only pay while using the image?
There is no long-term commitment. You subscribe only for the time you need the image. Payment is collected by the cloud provider based on active hours. If the image is not running, there is no charge. This suits variable or short-term workloads.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
