What differs between the five a1 instance sizes for billing?
Each size maps to a different amount of ARM-based compute and memory. The a1.medium carries the fewest resources, scaling up through a1.large, a1.xlarge, a1.2xlarge, and a1.4xlarge. All bill per hour of use. Choosing a larger size raises the hourly rate but gives more capacity for your networked application.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
The hourly software charge applies only while the instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing software fees. Note that underlying AWS storage costs may still apply to a stopped instance, but the framework itself meters running hours only.
Does this hourly listing require any software license purchase separately?
The framework is offered under GPLv2 or a commercial license. This hourly listing lets you run the software on ARM-based instances without upfront commitment. If your use case does not fit the open-source terms, you may need to arrange a commercial license directly with the vendor.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance.
