The Character API is a cloud-based character animation service. It makes use of cloud computing, edge caching, and spritesheet animation, to deliver a personalized avatar experience to any device, at scale.
The API lets you use JavaScript code to download spritesheets from the cloud. Like short loops of film, these "image strips" are then played back and seamlessly switched to create a continuous experience. Each spritesheet is fully-specified by its URL, and includes parameters such as character, clothing, and viewport settings, along with actions such as Look, Point, and Say. Spritesheets with novel combinations of parameters are created as needed in the cloud, and then cached for efficient use by your application.
Intermediate caching of spritesheets is allowed, and is actually the preferred way to use the API for applications involving AI, web services, and lip-synced Text-to-Speech. Our Reference Implementation shows you how to create your own caching server, so you can leverage cloud-based services from different vendors as part of your processing pipeline.
The Character API works well with modern mobile and desktop browsers, and provides a good trade-off between cloud resources, local compute power, and bandwidth.

AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
You pay per API request, with a single usage-based dimension. There are no tiers, instance sizes, or subscription commitments. Each call to the character animation service is metered and billed. Billing occurs monthly through the AWS Marketplace, and charges appear on your AWS bill. There is no minimum. You can cache the animation results on your own server, so you only pay when a new, uncached animation is first generated. Repeated views served from your cache incur no additional API charges, which can reduce your usage as traffic grows.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What counts as one API request for billing purposes?
Each call to the animate endpoint counts as one request. When you request a new character animation or image strip with a unique combination of URL parameters, that generates one billable call. There is no charge for the catalog API. Requests served from your own cache do not count.
How can I reduce the number of billable requests as my traffic grows?
You can cache animation results on your own server. The API is called only when the first customer views a particular animation. After that, requests come from your server's cache with no additional charge. This approach is preferred for web services, chatbots, and text-to-speech applications.
Is there a minimum spend or upfront commitment for the Character API?
No. The Character API has no subscription and no minimum. You are billed at the end of each month for the number of API calls made that month. Charges appear on your monthly AWS bill.
