SMART Safety

SMART Safety is a software tool for deriving 100% sample analytics at video-monitored transport network locations for proactively managing site-level safety and improving operations . The main uses are for building and maintaining an evidence base for supporting Vision Zero  and Safety System safety policies within a city, region, or state.

SMART Safety makes use of video data collected from either temporary or permanently installed HD quality video cameras installed at high-priority locations within a transport network. Typical sites include signalised intersections, un-signalised intersections, roundabouts, mid-block locations, merge and weave areas, multi-modal hubs, pedestrian zones, work zones, and school zones. Risk is assessed using carefully measured ‘critical conflict’  and ‘near-miss’  metrics, which have been proven to reliably predict future crashes. Video is usually collected for a minimum of one week to perform a risk assessment of a location or locations. Safety and operational treatments can also be evaluated rapidly by performing video collection both before and after a treatment is installed, replacing traditional crash-based methods  that often can take multiple years. Hotspot and blackspot programs are also supported and enhanced through rapid, proactive identification of site-level risks that cannot be ascertained using other methods such as loop detectors, safety audits, or star-rating systems.

SMART Safety provides validated analytics through a variety of user-friendly dashboards. AMAG validates the video analytics output for all customers, with correct road user identification minimum threshold set at 95% and within class threshold set at 90% minimum. Downstream analytics are generated from validated road user identification and position information are presented in the general analytics categories. Filtering of data by SMART users is available in all dashboards by road-user type, time of day, day of week, etc. The following dashboards are available in SMART Safety:

• Operations Data: Flows, average speeds, percentile speeds, and violations during the observed time periods.
• Conflict Video Clips: Short video clips of a sub-sample of conflicts observed at the site.
• Crash Risk Heat Maps: Heat maps, filterable by conflict type (e.g. pedestrian involved, rear-end, angle, etc.) show the temporal and spatial density of critical conflicts.
• Crash Prediction: View objective annual and hourly crash predictions based on type and severity of crash (not conflicts), based on the local relationship between conflicts and crashes.
• Treatment Evaluations: Assess the safety and operational impact of treatments at locations for proactive risk assessment with either ‘before/after’ or ‘with/without’ methodologies.
• Countermeasure Tool: Generate list of potential countermeasures based on risk profile of analysed site.
• Road User Trajectories: Generate trajectories of road users on a map or through camera view to determine ‘desire lines’ of road users.
• Benchmarking: Compare crash risk across multiple similar sites to support hotspot and blackspot analysis and methods.

The AMAG SMART Platform is hosted in AWS and powered by Serverless technologies. AI models are trained using Amazon SageMaker. AI inference and data analytics are performed in parallel at scale using AWS Batch.
